Using the Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM) approach, the focus of Naturopathic Nutrition is on the healing power of nature, using the natural foods to help:

  •  Prevent any imbalance which may occur and 
  • Support the body if there is a current imbalance

    In fact foods will support the body's own natural self healing process; however health, and that includes Brain Health is much more than the absence of an illness or ailment, it is about abundant vitality, optimum wellness and joy for life.

Why are nutrients important?

The body needs nutrients in order to function properly, the various macronutrients and micronutrients in various proportions are the tools needed to help sustain a healthy body and a healthy brain. The nutrients include carbohydrates, fats and proteins, as well as vitamins and minerals plus specific nutrients such as phytonutrients. These nutrients are needed for:

  • Creation of new cells, such as in growth
  • Repair of tissues, as with injuries and illness
  • Production of key substances such as hormones and enzymes
  • Metabolic processes, energy production

If diets are lacking in some of the nutrients, or bioavailability of nutrients is poor, then the self-healing process may take longer.

It is wonderful that each individual is unique, each responds differently to certain circumstances and will produce different responses. Foods too will promote different reactions in people, so with Naturopathic Nutrition, the aim is to consider each person uniquely, with each plan tailored to the specific needs of the individual. The body does not become out of balance over night, it can take many months or years of continual strain and stress before symptoms start to show. What is involved in a consultation?

During a friendly, warm chat we will go through your case, reviewing the symptoms, medical and family history, current diet and lifestyle. Prior to this I will send you a questionnaire to complete and send back before the chat. 

  • Health aims and goals
  • Health & lifestyle assessment, reviewing current condition,
    family history, medical history, lifestyle, food preferences
  • Food diary analysis
  • Review of current supplement regime
  • Review of medication and nutrition interaction (if applicable)
  • Discussion of any suitable functional tests

Family programmes will be tailored differently.

 
 

 

Functional tests

Functional tests are used to determine the exact situation in the body at that time, such as tissue damage, inflammation, hormone levels and then this can addressed with whole foods, supplements and lifestyle changes. This is a targeted approach, so if you are serious with your health and want a quicker route to understanding your condition, then this may be an approach to take.
